Indonesia Targets 27,000 Millennial Farmers to Boost Food Self-Sufficiency

INDONESIAUPDATES.COM, News En – In a bid to accelerate food self-sufficiency and position Indonesia as a global food powerhouse, the Ministry of Agriculture (Kementan) has launched an initiative to train and deploy 27,000 millennial farmers across the country. This effort aligns with President Prabowo Subianto’s directive to strengthen national food security through modern agricultural clusters.

Minister of Agriculture Andi Amran Sulaiman announced the initiative on Monday, emphasizing its role in enhancing food production while generating employment opportunities for young farmers. To ensure the program’s success, Kementan has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Ministry of Manpower (Kemenaker) to facilitate labor absorption and technical support.

“We are collaborating with Kemenaker, which has between 300 and 500 instructors. Currently, 27,000 millennial farmers have registered to participate in this program,” Minister Amran stated during a press briefing at the Kementan office in Jakarta.

The millennial farmers will be strategically placed in five key provinces: South Papua, Central Kalimantan, South Kalimantan, West Kalimantan, and South Sumatra. The program will also extend to 12 additional provinces, including Aceh, North Sumatra, and South Sulawesi, further broadening its impact.

“This is a long-term solution. By involving five major provinces, we aim to expedite our food self-sufficiency goals,” Amran added.

To support the implementation of the program, Kementan will provide 3,600 agricultural tools, with a total target of 7,000 units to be distributed. Additionally, Kemenaker will supply trained mechanics to ensure the efficient operation of these tools.

“We are ensuring that the necessary workforce is available to operate and maintain these agricultural tools. Kemenaker will provide certified instructors and mechanics through the National Professional Certification Agency (BNSP), aligning with the government’s priority program,” stated Minister of Manpower Yassierli.

The collaboration between Kementan and Kemenaker is expected to accelerate Indonesia’s path toward food self-sufficiency while equipping millennial farmers with the skills and resources needed to modernize the agricultural sector. This initiative marks a significant step toward transforming Indonesia into a leading global food supplier.
