INDONESIAUPDATES.COM, News En – Head of the Presidential Communications Office (PCO) Hasan Nasbi has assured the public that the installation of an escalator at Borobudur Temple, Central Java, will not damage the cultural heritage structure. The temporary escalator is being installed to facilitate the visit of French President Emmanuel Macron on May 29, 2025.
Hasan emphasized that the installation does not involve drilling or nailing and is being carried out under the strict supervision of the Ministry of Culture.
“Many people are concerned about whether this will damage the heritage site. But rest assured, everything has been done under the supervision of the Ministry of Culture — no nails, no drills,” Hasan said at the PCO office in Central Jakarta, Monday (May 26, 2025).
He added that the escalator will be dismantled immediately after President Macron’s visit.
Macron’s Visit Requires Time-Efficient Facilities
Hasan explained that the escalator and stair lift were installed to make President Macron’s visit more efficient due to his limited time during the state visit.
“As a head of state, his time is limited. This isn’t like a regular tourist visit that can take a full day. Facilities like an escalator and stair lift are provided to help him reach the upper levels of Borobudur more efficiently,” he said.
A step-free footpath has also been prepared to help the president ascend to the fourth level of the temple.
Stair Lift from 5th to 8th Floor
In addition to the escalator, a stair lift — similar to those installed in homes for mobility — will be used from the fifth to the eighth floor of the temple.
“It allows quicker and easier access, ensuring that the president won’t be fatigued and can fully enjoy the grandeur of Borobudur,” Hasan added.
He concluded by saying that the goal is to allow President Macron to experience the full beauty and serenity of Borobudur Temple without damaging any of its sacred structure.
