North Jakarta Named as Model City for Waste Management in Indonesia

JAKARTA, INDONESIAUPDATES.COM – The Ministry of Environment (KLH) has officially designated North Jakarta as Indonesia’s model city for waste management. This initiative aims to develop a sustainable and integrated waste management system to reduce landfill waste.

“North Jakarta will serve as a pilot city. Our focus is on creating an agenda that benefits all stakeholders. KLH is committed to supporting this program to ensure its success,” said Noer Adi Wardojo, Expert Staff for Biodiversity and Socio-Cultural Sustainability at the Ministry of Environment, on Saturday (February 8, 2025).

Community-Based Waste Management

The Jakarta Environment Agency (DLH DKI Jakarta) has prepared a strategic approach to ensure the program’s effectiveness. One key focus is implementing waste management at the neighborhood level (RW), reducing household waste before it reaches the temporary disposal sites (TPS).

“Each RW should establish an independent waste management system that helps reduce household waste before it reaches TPS,” said Asep Kuswanto, Head of DLH DKI Jakarta.

Additionally, optimizing waste banks will play a crucial role in reinforcing the circular economy. DLH DKI Jakarta will collaborate with various organizations to strengthen North Jakarta’s role as a model city for waste management. Key partners include the Indonesian Waste Bank Association (ASOBSI), the Indonesian Packaging Recovery Organization (IPRO), the Indonesian Plastic Recycling Association (ADUPI), the Indonesian Hotel and Restaurant Association (PHRI) DKI Jakarta, the Indonesian Shopping Center Management Association (APPBI), and maggot farming advocates.

Advanced Waste Processing Solutions

A major solution to reduce waste volume in North Jakarta is the operation of the Refuse Derived Fuel (RDF) Plant in Rorotan. This facility, claimed to be the largest RDF plant in the world, is set to be inaugurated by the newly elected Governor of Jakarta, Pramono Anung Wibowo.

“With the Jakarta RDF Plant, we can significantly reduce waste shipments to Bantargebang,” Asep Kuswanto added.

As North Jakarta takes on the role of a model city for waste management, the strategies implemented here are expected to set a benchmark for other cities across Indonesia. Through an integrated waste management approach, waste bank optimization, and the utilization of RDF technology, North Jakarta has the potential to lead the way in building an environmentally friendly and sustainable urban future.
